Press Release: Lawyers for George Bachiashvili Warn of Alleged Assassination Plot

WASHINGTON DC, April 23, 2025 – Robert Amsterdam, international lawyer representing George Bachiashvili, has been made aware of credible threats to the life of his client, based on information from two foreign intelligence agencies.

Given the perilous situation facing their client, Mr. Amsterdam’s legal team has no option but to issue this statement, and to call upon law enforcement authorities internationally to afford Mr. Bachiashvili protection and to investigate those behind this alleged plot.

Mr. Bachiashvili has authorised Mr. Amsterdam to make this information publicly available.

Mr. Amsterdam stated: “We believe that the Georgian authorities would engage in virtually any level of violence necessary to achieve their objectives of eliminating all credible political opponents and critics of the regime.” Mr. Amsterdam also did not exclude that the assassination plot could be “the work of external forces seeking to destabilise the situation in Georgia even further than it is already”.

Mr. Bachiashivili, after insisting on staying in Georgia to defend himself against absurd charges, was forced to flee when it became obvious that even the most obviously exculpatory evidence put the Georgian court would be rejected in the pre-programmed proceedings of a judicial system marked by international criticisms and the sanctioning of judges by the United States.

Mr. Amsterdam has previously denounced the case brought against Bachiashvili as politically motivated and legally incoherent. According to an independent study of the case by Transparency International Georgia, the merits are so weak that “in any legal system based on the rule of law, such charges would not only be inconceivable but would never even reach court proceedings.”
